The Saskatchewan Prevention Institute's (Prevention Institute) mandate is to help all children thrive through primary prevention and the promotion of well-being. The Prevention Institute’s goal is healthy children, with the belief that all children in Saskatchewan, regardless of ability, have the right to the best physical, social, and emotional health possible.
Addressing Key Focus Areas of Children’s Health and Well-Being: The Prevention Institute provides education, training, and capacity building across six main programming pillars: child injury prevention, including child traffic safety; child abuse prevention, including parenting support; child development and early childhood mental health; perinatal and infant health; sexual and reproductive health; and prevention of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD).
Responding to Emerging Issues Impacting Children’s Health: The Prevention Institute works to provide collaborative, coordinated, timely, evidence-based, and ethical responses to emerging and persistent issues related to children’s health in Saskatchewan. Issues are identified through community/service provider requests, provincial and national research, participating on committees, and partnering with researchers and other organizations. Responses can include health promotion activities and campaigns, resource development, development of trainings, and/or advocating for system change.
Building Community Capacity and Empower Service Providers: The Prevention Institute prioritizes community relationships, engagement, and capacity building to strengthen engagement with diverse communities across Saskatchewan. The Prevention Institute provides evidence-based information, education, resources, and skill development to enhance service provider’s ability to address children's well-being. Much of this information and resources are also directly accessible by parents/caregivers and/or youth, as applicable.
Knowledge Exchange and Translation: The Prevention Institute is a trusted partner throughout Saskatchewan for its expertise in knowledge translation and exchange, providing evidence-based information in a format that is accessible to service providers and the public.
Collaborating for Impact: The Prevention Institute partners with organizations and community’s province-wide to leverage resources, strengths, and expertise, helping to ensure sustainable improvements in children's health. Collaborating across sectors like health, education, social services, justice, community organizations, Indigenous organizations, and communities enables the Prevention Institute to support the priority health needs of children, parents/caregivers, and families across the province.

We share evidence based information through print and web based resources and provide education and training on all of our areas of focus. The Institute provived tools for community groups to assist in development of prevention programs. The organization has established and maintained networking and partnering projects, links with community, not for profit, and government organizations that further prevention efforts in the areas of alcohol, tobacco, and drug effects during pregnancy and early childhood, positive parenting, strategies to reduce risk of childhood injuries, and developing programmings to improve reproductive and infant health.
