For some 30 years since shortly after the death of Sydney J Risk,a pioneer in live theatre in Western Canada,we have given prizes to each of 3 recipients in order to encourage them in their choice to pursue their careers as professionals in theatre.Over the years the prizes have evolved to be each in the amount of $1500. One is to a student actor graduating from the Langara College Studio 58 theatre school chosen and nominated for the prize by the faculty at this school. The second is to an emerging playwright chosen by a jury struck by the Jessie Richardson Theatre Society which presents a number of "Jessie's" and other prizes,including ours,at the annual professional theatre awards in Vancouver. And the third is to a student,chosen by the faculty,entering second year ofa two year program leading to a Master of Fine Arts degree in directing at the Theatre School at the University of B C. this latter prize at UBC has evolved over the last few years to be an annual scholarship funded by the SJRF.
