The Strathcona Youth Justice Committee ("SYJC") comprises of a group of volunteers from the community who are empowered under the Youth Criminal Justice Act to administer an alternative measures program. The SYJC was formed after the Strathcona County Council sanctioned the committee as an approvedbody, pursuing its objectives within the community, on February 15th 1994. This committee oversees a program that serves as an alternative to court imposed punishment and consequent criminal record. Youths charged with minor criminal offences may, after a Strathcona will require a court appearance for disposition. The existence of the EJS does not imply that all youth willbe referred to SYJC. The young person charged must be willing to take part in the program, which in itself requires an admission of guilt. in additionthe youth must show recognition of the harm they have done and a willingness to make restitution to the victim (where possible) and the community. After the court has referred the file to the SYJC, an appointment is made withthe youth and their parents.
