MaterCare International's Project Isiolo has continued to provide essential obstetrical care to a rural population. MCI has provided community outreach programmes to encourage all mothers to come to the hospital or nearest clinic for prenatal care, and for safe, clean delivery by a midwife at the maternity clinic if the pregnancy is normal or at the hospital by a doctor when complications arise. The hospital facilities have been enlarged to allow for added patient beds, kitchen and laundry, maintenance area and an on-call room for doctors. The second rural maternity clinic is in the planning stage and will provide normal pregnancy care and referral of high risk mothers to the maternity hospital with access to MCI's emergency.obstetrical transport. Staff education sessions have also been provided. The hospital has faced a number of challenges including a severe drought resulting in starvation in rural areas which has increased the suffering of rural mothers and babies and it also remained open during a 4 month long strike by all Kenyan doctors in government hospitals and thus was the only maternity facility open in the country with a population of 188,000. MCI website has continued to provide useful information for doctors and other health professionals in particular in developing countries. The excellent services provide by MCI's maternity hospital received recognition from the County Ministry of Health with the donation of equipment.
