The Rock Mountain Book Award is a children's choice book award for Alberta students in grades 4-7. Participating students must read at least 5 of the 20 short listed Canadian fiction and nonfiction titles and vote for their favorite . Participating schools and public libraries from all over Alberta vote each year. The program is designed to promote literacy and rewards students for reading by making them the judges in this province wide events. The Rocky Mountains Book Awards promotes Canadian authors and Canadian publishers. There is no fee charged to schools or Libraries, but they must purchase copies of the short listed books from a book jobber or bookstore. A poster and brochure is sent to every school and public Library in the Province of Alberta. Two complete sets of the short listed titles are drawn for from the list of registered schools and livraries. The author of the winning title is invited to tour several (4 or 5) participating Alberta schools or livraries, chosen by draw. The main goal of the Rocky Mountain Book Award is to promote Literacy. On occasion the Rocky Mountian Book Award Committee sponsor a Young Writers' Workshops(s) for grade 5 and 6 students.
