In 2016, we developed and launched a social enterprise, Gear Up Recycled Bicycles. The project hired high school age youth who were struggling with employment barriers and taught them bicycle mechanical skills and soft skills training in customer services. Donated bicycles were repaired and re-sold at affordable prices to low-income people, new immigrants, and students. The project was successful and will be continued in 2017 with even greater community support. Cycle Kingston operated its Pedal and Paddle summer day camp for the second year, giving young people a chance to learn safe cycling and safe paddling skills, while gaining an appreciation for self-propelled transportation and respect for the environment.
