Word-Play Inc. offered children from three elementary schools in Toronto's Queen West community the opportunity to participate in a reading enjoyment program for students in grades three, four and five and a creative writing program for grade six students. Each program had nine sessions in the fall and nine in the winter. Both after school programs were designed to make literacy activities enjoyable and to encourage a strong sense of a local cultural community. The reading program was coordinated by three volunteers (seniors) and led by six Teacher Candidates from York University's Faculty of Education. Five senior students served as mentors. The writing program, created and led by a professional writer, included two Teacher Candidates who supported the children and assisted the director.
