Veterinarians Without Borders/Vétérinaires sans frontiers is a Animal Welfare Charity
Veterinarians Without Borders focuses on animal health as a way to improve the health of communities. Globally, we focus on controlling rabies, promoting equality, responding to disasters, and training and educating community animal health workers in areas where there are no veterinarians.
Companion Animals
Those of us who live in larger urban and rural communities are fortunate to have access to trusted veterinarians in our communities, who provide us the opportunity to have our dogs vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and treated should they be injured or sick.
But for those of us who do not live in a community where those services are not available
In 2017, a study conducted on behalf of VWB/VSF found 54 remote communities of 100 or more people in Canada’s three northern territories had little or no access to veterinary services.
Animals in the northern regions of Canada tend to live shorter lives, dying from diseases and causes that are either treatable or preventable. There is also a very real health threat to people. In some communities, the inability to control dog populations puts humans, particularly children, at risk from dog bites, for example. As well, unvaccinated dogs can transfer diseases - including rabies - to humans.
Volunteers Engaged in Gender-Responsive Technical Solutions (VETS)
Volunteers Engaged in Gender-Responsive Technical Solutions (VETS) is an 8-year (2020-2028) initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada that will see 190 Canadian volunteers take on international assignments on behalf of Veterinarians without Borders/Vétérinaires sans frontiers.
The goal of the project is to work to improve the economic and social well-being of the world’s most marginalized people, particularly women and girls, in six countries in Africa and Asia.
The project will use the skills of Canadian volunteers to support smallholder farmers, primarily women, to reduce poverty by improving family income and nutrition, principally through improved production of livestock and crops.
The project is built around the One Health concept which recognizes that the health of animals, people, and the natural environment are interconnected.
Emergency Rescue and Relief
In these times of extraordinary challenges, your kindness is a reminder that together, we can be there for animals and communities facing unimaginable emergencies. While it’s difficult to predict where me may be needed next, Veterinarians without Borders’ Crisis Fund allows us to respond at a moments notice to help animals and people through emergency response efforts and relief.
VWB/VSF in Ukraine
Since the beginning of the war in 2022, Veterinarians Without Borders established long-term partnerships with local animal welfare organizations in Ukraine. These partnerships are focused on ensuring the delivery of pet food and medicine, providing preventative veterinary care (spay/neuter programs, vaccinations, and parasite treatments), animal rescues in evacuated cities, animal shelter reconstruction and offering online veterinary services. This support targets war-affected shelters and households, including internally displaced families, families who have lost their homes, and those who care for animals in volunteer and home boarding situations.
