MEA's mission is to preserve, protect and restore watersheds around Greater Toronto. We achieve this thru four major programs in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. A quick summary of our 3 largest programs and accomplishments for 2015/2016 season is as follows; (1)Hatchery Operations - Collected 145,000 Coho eggs on the Credit river which will be incubated and raised to over 25g each in size over the next year for release back into the Credit. Natural reproduction is limited in the Credit due to the large urban population it flows thru and the effects it has on the watershed. By raising the fish in the hatchery we get them thru the very sensitive early stages of life where high mortality exists in the natural environment. Stocked 50,000 2015 year class Coho. We stocked 45,000 Brown trout into urban watersheds around the Toronto area. Collected 20,000 Rainbow eggs from the Rouge River for release back into the Rouge when they reach about 25g in size. This is to restore healthy fish populations in this heavily degrated watershed due to the urban environment it flows thru. (2)Operation of The Milne Fish Ladder - Moving rainbow trout over the Milne dam gives them access to better quality spawning habitat in the head waters of the Rouge watershed Fish are tagged, measured an weighed as they are moved over the dam so health of population can be studied. (3)Stream Restoration -Planting trees for watershed bank stabilization.
