The on-going programs of the Downtown Society for the Fellowship of Recovering Alcoholics (AKA Vancouver Recovery Club) include a 24/7 drop in and referral center for the these seeking help and relief from substance abuse including and not limited to alcohol, drugs, overeating, gambling, etc. The VRC hosts 70 12-step programs per week and has over 65,000 visits per year to the center. The society helps clients recover from drug and alcohol dependency and provides them with life skills and opportunities necessary for them to return to the work force and to their families to live normal productive lives. The society operates on a peer-to-peer program based on one's length of sobriety helping the newer clients with less sobriety. It is a handup peer to peer approach. The society also provides referral services to detox, treatment centers, recovery houses and government agencies services and resources. The society operates during the day with approximately 60 volunteers performing over 8,000 volunteer hours per year. The Vancouver Recovery Club operates an outreach program to help the street entrenched homeless to find and secure shelter and permanent housing as well as receive safe transport to client within the addictions recovery field working closely with the Vancouver Police Department, Ambulance services and agencies in the DTEs
