The project in the Literacy series entitled, "Deaf Literacy: The development of a model for access to literacy for Deaf persons in rural and remote areas", was continued this year. While individual literacy projects are approved for funding on an annual basis, the overall project dealing with literacy and deafness is now entering its 22nd year of operation. An important element of this project is that it involves not-for-profit organizations and partners from both the academic and Deaf community in Canada. The Institute contributes to these not-for-profit organizations periodically. The focus this year continues to be with dissemination, implementation and evaluation of future opportunities in this area, particularly in relation to the Nunavut Inuit Sign Language (ISL) project. The Inuit Sign Language Documentation Project (Phase Nine) was initiated this year. Funding for the project continues from the Government of Nunavut: Department of Culture and Heritage. This ninth phase continues to build on the activities of the previous phase and expands the glossary/dictionary along with revised videos and posters, and new formal ISL cards with content illustrations. The involvement of the Nunavummi Disabilities Makinnasuaqtiit Society (NDMS) in Iqaluit continues to be an important component of this project - particularly for dissemination of materials.
