The Nature conservancy of Canada (NCC) is the nation's leading not-for-profit, private land conservation organization, working to protect our most important natural areas and the species they sustain. Since 1962 NCC and its partners have helped to protect more than 1.1 million hectares (2.8 million acres), coast to coast. NCC uses science-based conservation planning to identify projects. Land is acquired through donation, purchase or conservation agreements with willing landowners. Once the land is secured NCC ensures it is cared for and managed for the long-term. NCC also supports other like-minded conservation organizations. Under its conservation engagement mandate NCC also operates national internship and volunteer programs. In fiscal year 2015-16 more than 2,860 Conservation Volunteers donated their time to talents to help NCC achieve tangible, on-th-ground conservation results. In the same year NCC encouraged our future conservation leaders by supporting 37 paid interns. NCC creates partnerships with individuals, corporations, community groups, foundations, and government agencies to find conservation solutions. In the past year NCC and its supporters have helped to conserve 14, 160 hectares (35,000 acres) and provide habitat protection for 29% of Canada's species at risk.
