Primary activity is to recruit members for fraternal organization, Philae Shriners. The society was originally formed under the Freemasons but officially formed during the Great Depression when the poor and sick had no financial or healthcare support. The society began with opening a hospital in the United States that specialized in the treatment of Polio. Currently, the society raises funds for its international hospital projects which specialize in spinal injuries, severe burns and limb deformities. The secondary activity is to raise funds for local children with the above medical issue who need medical treatment. (This is considered their Children's Travel Fund in their records). Children from NS and PEI are funnelled through the Philae Shriners and are assessed by doctors at the IWK. After a medical opinion is formed, the child may need to access treatment in Montreal, Boston, or Philadelphia.
