North York Harvest Food Bank is the primary food bank & distribution centre for northern Toronto. Focusing on the Toronto suburbs where food bank usage has increased by 48% since 2008, NYH picks up, packages and distributes over 2.3 million pounds of food to its 47 member agencies serving over 15,000 people every month, throught neighbourhood food banks, meal programs, youth and women shelters, perinatal programs, community kitchens and after-school programs. With the mission of ensuring everyone in Toronto can meet their food needs, North York Harvest Food Bank works closely with its donors and member agencies to provide families who do not have enough food, access to non-perishable and fresh food and to develop and implements food programs built to empower people in the community. These programs, like learning how to cook, nutrition work shops, urban gardening and food safety classes, teach important skills to participants and play an important part in reducing social barriers and improving economic well-being.
