Morrell Sanctuary Society consists of members whose interest in preserving this sanctuary is paramount. We had part-time paid office workers, however most maintenance, administration and environmental programs are carried out by our volunteers. We participated in the Canada Summer Student Jobs Program for our children's summer nature day camps. A federal grant covered two thirds of the salary paid to two camp leaders. Volunteers maintained over eleven kilometres of forested trails to ensure safety to all users, now estimated to be over 20,000 per year. This facility is open, free of charge, for the public to enjoy from dawn to dusk year-round. Our Nature Interpretive programs were in demand again this year by local elementary schools to provide an environmental learning experience consistent with Province of BC teaching outlines. These programs are led by highly competent volunteers whose knowledge and teaching abilities are recognized and respected by school staff. 64 classes, averaging 17 students each, attended sessions this school year. A nominal fee was collected for each group to help defray the cost of program materials used. We conducted tours to groups from local senior's residences on our wheelchair accessible trail. We provide trail maps, and at points of interest, illustrated signs explaining and identifying them.
